Australia Tourism FAQ’s

What’s the weather like?

It’s a huge country, and the weather varies. It tends to be dry, but everything else depends where you are. The Northern states tend to be hotter; the south most point of Tasmania is often cold. You will have to look at the specifics of where you travel.

Best time to travel?

As the seasons are reversed in comparison to the northern hemisphere many like to travel in September to November; this is pre/early summer in Australia, and avoids the Northern winter. Opinions vary. Find when the cheapest flight tickets are.

Do I Need vaccinations?

No vaccinations are required for Australia or New Zealand.

Where should I visit in Sydney?

In Sydney: Harbour Bridge climb, the Opera house, Darling harbour for shopping, biggest IMAX theatre, and many museums. Try a Sydney day tours if you want to see as much as possible.

Melbourne, Queensland, Canberra and just about any major city has worthwhile tourist sites.

How long does it take to get to Australia?

From the west coast of the USA, about 14 hours. Obviously it depends on location.

I hear a lot about dangerous animals, should I worry?

There are some poisonous snakes and spiders, but problems are rare. Nobody had died from a spider bite since the early 1980s. Snakes are rarely seen and rarely cause problem unless provoked.

What are drop bears and Bunyips?

Drop bears are a practical joke, made up to scare tourists. Bunyips are an urban legend, like Bigfoot or the Yeti; these things might exist, but it is unlikely.

Will I see Kangaroos and Koala in the city?

Not really, except at a Zoo. A few smaller inland towns have wildlife that comes into the streets, but this is rare.

Many people underestimate how large the country is. Many places that appear near each other on a map are really several days apart. It is about three thousand miles from Sydney to Perth. Do not attempt to walk.

What is electrical Power like?

240Volt at 10amps. This is about twice the voltage and half the current of the USA system. Do not use simple plug adapters as the voltage is too high! You will damage equipment.

Apart from a few very isolated places almost everywhere in Australia have modern power and water facilities.

What is Port Stephens?

A natural harbour and the surround area, it is popular with tourist because of the marine life; Port Stephens Tours look for whales and dolphins, but there are many other beach related activities.

Some parts are a little like the stereotypes in the media, a lot is quite different. Australia is very multicultural, and about as varied as any country can be.

A few steps to take to reduce business risks

Some risks in life are inevitable, but it is best to minimize them as much as possible.

  • Where appropriate, get insurance. Nothing will wipe you out faster than a legal problem. If you can’t afford insurance, don’t pursue that line of business until you can afford it. If you don’t know where insurance is appropriate you need to do some research. Remember that advice on the internet should only depend on official sources from insurance companies or government sites.

Some professions have large group insurance policies. Investigate this as the prices will be lower.

Remember, if the business changes the insurance might well need changing too.

  • Selects a business structure where you have limited personal liability. Sole proprietorship will almost certainly leave you with personal liability; a corporation or limited liability company will give you much less trouble.
  • Risk analysis. Evaluate where risk lie and look at alternate way to achieve the same results. If there is no alternate way, ask yourself whether the risk is justified by the benefits it may give. Avoid at all cost anything that is a risk to human safety, remembering that any product that can be misused will certainly be misused by somebody out there. Try to deal with products that cannot be misused.
  • If something is high risk but still essential, try to have it outsourced to a group that specializes in this type of work. Find a group with the best safety record possible. Using outside experts reduces the risk of accidents, and transfers the liability to them.
  • Give warranties and get as much customer feedback as realistically possible. Use this to modify products and production methods, making products as safe and reliable as possible. Replacing items/services under warranty benefits you reputation.
  • If you have employees you need to let them know their limits and authority. You don’t want them spending significant money unless it’s a good decision that you approve of, or implementing production changes without your consent.
  • Keep an eye on accounts and loans. Have an accountant if possible, and keep debt to a minimum. Unless you are making more money that a loan is costing you in interest you are probably making a mistake somewhere. Look at the changing tax situation. Every year there are a different set of regulation that can benefit a small business in some way. The 2015 year has added benefits for asset deductions.

Looking for new Carpet – Synthetic Fibres

Of course different carpets have different advantages and disadvantages. Some of the general options for synthetic carpets are:

Carpet Material:

Nylon Carpets: a very popular choice, especially with areas that need frequent carpet cleaning. Nylon carpet is very soft, durable and resistant to stains.

Polypropylene Carpets: Similar to nylon, and nearly as soft, polypropylene is extremely durable and stain resistant. As a material it is considered low hazard as long as it is not use for containing food. For carpeting it is resilient, with only substances like glue causing any problems.

Polyester: Polyester can have the most vibrant colours, and never really suffers from fading. There are no issues with allergies and because it can be made from recycled plastic it is about as eco-friendly as one could ask.

Carpet Styles:

Uncut carpet Pile: Basically one long loop of string, left uncut and used to make the surface of the carpet. These are popular, easy to clean, stain resistant and tend to not suffer from footprints or other indentations. . On the down side they are not as soft as other options and occasionally things can get caught in the carpet loop. Because of the tendency for things to get caught some consider these unsuitable for home with pets.

Cut carpet Pile: This is another soft carpet which is easy to clean, but it has a tendency to show footmarks and indentations. The indentations can usually be brushed out, but these carpets do suffer wear faster than other carpets and require more frequent replacing. Many owners consider the appeal of the carpet to outweigh the shorter life expectancy.

Frieze Cut Pile: This uses tightly twisted and kinked strands, giving a highly durable surface that tends to hide dirt and wear. A good choice for stronger traffic areas.

Plush carpet: a very rich and luxurious surface, but very prone to wear. This is impressive looking with frequent carpet cleaning and fine for low traffic area where people always remove shoes.

Diamond Price, Sydney City

DIAMOND PRICE, SYDNEY CITY

What are diamond rings worth?

There is a lot of confusion about this. Many people go by the expert valuation, but these are for insurance purposes. We do recommend insuring valuables, but the higher valuation drives up the cost of insurance. In the event that the item actually is stolen you do receive the payment, but you are paying higher premiums for this possibility.

At the end of the day your diamond ring price in money is the wholesale value of the diamond and the gold that it is made of. This is less than the money you would pay if you bought a ring commercially. The extra cost is taken up in retail stocking, the manufacturing cost and a certain amount of hard profit. The manufacturing cost is a source of confusion; the skill and craftsmanship for an expensive diamond in a plain ring is the same as a cheap diamond in a plain ring. This is not added to the later value of the item, and a cheap diamond will almost certainly remain cheap. Valuations should account for this, but we cannot be certain. A commercially bought ring is unlikely to sell for its original price; this is never really a means of investment.

If you want to sell a diamond ring, the asking price is helped if you send it to a reputable lab for certification. Any diamond shop in Sydney city can recommend a lab, and probably arrange to have it safely sent. If you bought it locally you should consider the same diamond shop you originally purchased it from. A Diamond shop in Sydney City will often take it on consignment.

Misconceptions About Eyesight

Carrots are good for your eyes;

Well, not exactly. A healthy diet is certainly good for keeping your eyesight, and vegetables like carrots should be part of this. But once you eyesight is fully functional it cannot get any better. A poor diet will damage your eyes; good diet significantly helps keep the eyesight you have.

Vision loss cannot be treated.

There is always something to improve partial vision. Glasses, contacts, orthokeratology treatments at night, laser surgery for some conditions. Talk to you doctor and optometrist.

The Sun cannot hurt your eyes

UV light form the Sun can certainly have a negative impact over time. More than 50% of pensioners have cataracts, many of which could have been prevented with proper protection. Protect your eyes with UV sunglasses.

Reading in dim Light can damage your eyes.

There is no evidence for this; dim light is just inconvenient. As we get older we need brighter light as contrast tends to fade, but that is the natural process of aging.

Sitting too close to the TV will damage your eyes.

Again, it doesn’t seem to do any permanent harm, though it has no real benefits either. Sitting too close to TVs or computer monitors can cause tiredness; there might be some heath issues with radiation, but this seems unlikely.

The wrong prescription of glasses will damage eyes.

Partly true. Children under 6 can suffer poor eye development if the prescription is wrong; this should be immediately attended to if the child show evidence of poor vision. For most other people the wrong glasses will cause poor co-ordination, tired eyes, and run the risk of serious accidents, but not really damage the eyes directly. If you suspect the prescription is wrong then contact a Sydney optometrist.

Glasses will cure learning disabilities.

Not really. Poor vision can cause learning problems and be misdiagnosed as a learning disability, but it is not really a learning disability, it has simply been mistaken for one. An exception to this is that some dyslexics seem to benefit from tinted glasses, but this is unrelated to the eyes focusing and is still controversial

Contact your Sydney CBD optometrist if you have any concerns about eyesight for you or your family.

Cheap supplies save money

This is the same principle with almost anything- a cheap and nasty alternative causes problems and actually wastes time and probably money. If cheap thread breaks you have to spend time resetting the machine- this is reason enough not to do it. Colourfast issues are another reason.

On the other hand buying in bulk can save you money. This is not a cheap product, just saving money through wiser purchasing. The principle doesn’t apply to some other areas like cooking, where a product has a limited shelf life. But sewing materials last for years. Stock up if you buy in bulk, find a bargain, or are lucky to find the one or two inexpensive alternatives that actually do work well.

Stick with the brands that came with the machine

Well, that is one option. Try the others, the quality will vary. Try to find some tests for your products, like how easily it breaks, does it fade in hot water, or lose colour with bleach or sunlight. Experiment and find the best results. Or Google to find what works for others.

Rayon is never colourfast.

Well, I have had rayon threads that faded with bleach and in hot water, but I’ve had a few brands that didn’t. As some of the garments I embroider aren’t colourfast either it doesn’t always matter. If it’s a dry clean garment, and you want that glossy look of rayon, then embroider with it.

On the other hand we now have trilobal polyester threads which have the sheen of rayon but are also quite strong.

You need to sew in order to do embroidery

Not really. They both use needle and thread, but that’s where the resemblance ends. Then again, people can do both.

Printing and other image systems have replaced embroidery

Not really. Jeans will not replace business suits or tuxedos; one is for formal wear, the other is for casual. It’s the same for embroidery, which is the more classy way to put an emblem or image on a piece of cloth.

If you want that classy look for uniforms or family items look into custom embroidery services with Sydney rainbow Embroidery.

Plantation shutters and blinds, Sydney

A casual glance can confuse blinds and plantation shutters. Both have horizontal slates, both can control the amount of light and air. But blinds consist or just the horizontal slats, plantation shutters have a door-like frame to contain the slates. As such, plantation shutters give a little bit more flexibility.

Blinds do have the advantage when it comes to compactness; pull the string and the horizontal slats stack together into a small space. Modern metal blinds are even more compact than their earlier wooden counterparts. This is compact and the simplicity of the mechanism means malfunctions are unlikely.
Shutters also operate on a simple mechanism that rarely goes wrong. The frame is a simple door on hinges that folds to one side. This presumes some wall space, but little else. When first popular many generations ago these types of shutters were external, so any space they took up was outside the house; they were in no way intrusive to the people inside. Later, when used with glass windows, they became popular as indoor fixtures. Adjustments to the angle of the wooden slats allowed light and air to be easily controlled

Both shutters and blinds can have their horizontal slats on a motorized control. This is more than a gimmick. Strings are a safety hazard with young children who can easily choke. Motorized controls avoid these problems, and allow one to stand away from the window and observe the effect of opening and closing the shutters.

Plantation shutters can be used as something between a window and doorway on a balcony. One effective design for this is café shutters, which have a top and lower door that open separately. Each can have horizontal slats, but often the lower door is solid wood.

For blinds, plantations shutters or security doors talk to Sydney blinds.
